13.3.3. Elimination of consequences of corrosion or cracks in body panels

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove paint from the damaged area, and also from area in several centimeters around damages by means of the emery nozzle or a wire brush established on a drill.
2. If you do not have these tools, it is possible to use an emery paper.
3. After removal of paint it is possible to estimate as far as metal is struck with a rust, and on the basis of it to decide whether it is necessary to replace all panel (if it is possible) or to restore the damaged area.
4. New body panels are not so expensive as many think, both, often, quicker and more effectively will be to install the new panel, than to try to restore the big areas which underwent corrosion.
5. Remove all elements from the damaged area, except those that can serve as a template for restoration of an initial form of the panel (for example, headlights of head light).
6. Then by means of scissors for cutting of a tin or a hacksaw cloth remove the metal which rusted and covered with corrosion.
7. Bend edges of an opening inside to create small deepening for primer.
8. Clear the struck area a wire brush for removal of rusty dust from other surface of metal.
9. Paint the struck area with anticorrosive paint if there is an access to a reverse side of the rusted area, process as well it.
10. Before applying primer, it is necessary to close an opening somehow. It can be made by means of an aluminum or plastic grid or by means of an aluminum tape.
11. To close a big opening, it is the best of all to use an aluminum or plastic grid or fibreglass.
12. Cut out a piece of the grid having approximately the form and the size of an opening, then put a grid on an opening so that its edges were lower than the level of other plane.
13. The grid can be pasted by means of several drops of primer put on perimeter.
14. The aluminum tape needs to be used for small or very narrow openings.
15. Wind off a tape, cut off a piece of the required length and a form, then remove a sheeting (if it is pasted on a tape) and stick an opening; it is possible to paste one more layer of a tape if thickness of one layer is not enough.
16. Press edges of a tape by means of the handle of the screw-driver or the similar tool in order that it densely adjoined to metal.
